Our Commitment to Safety... Safety is of paramount importance in fertility treatment and this has always been recognised by The Bridge Centre. Events at other clinics in the past have underlined the need for 'fail-safe' systems. These are in place at Bridge and are constantly reviewed and rechecked. Professor Gedis Grudzinskas, Medical Director of The Bridge Centre, explains our policy in the following way: - "Fertility treatment involves the skilled and careful handling of delicate genetic material. A range of treatments, which includes IVF, have been developed to meet the needs of people who, for a variety of reasons, cannot conceive naturally. These treatments are carried out by highly trained and skilled people who care deeply about their work and who place the highest priority on the welfare of the patients and the unborn child. The procedures for managing the treatment process have evolved continuously during the twenty-five years that fertility treatment has been possible. At The Bridge Centre, we have refined these procedures to the point where no single person is able to make decisions or take action at any stage of the treatment process without double checks by qualified people. We call this the Witnessing System and our team of embryologists has been expanded and trained to meet the demands. Our controls begin long before sperm and eggs are collected and embryos created and remain in place throughout every stage. Every detail of every procedure is regularly reviewed and the patients themselves are involved in the final identity checking process. Every historical file is retained and completed cases are rechecked step-by-step. Our certainty that Fertility Treatment at Bridge is as safe as it is possible to make it is based on the evidence, not speculation. Knowledge of mistakes in the UK is limited at the present time to one other incident at another UK NHS hospital. We accept that, with more resources, the HFEA could increase its levels of control, but regular checks of every HFEA-licensed clinic in the UK have ensured that UK standards are, we believe, the highest in the world. We remain committed to these standards and to the successful and safe treatment of each and every one of our patients. At Bridge, we work to three criteria which are clearly stated in all our published material and on our website - Care, Affordability, Safety and Success. See also - |
