IVF: The next generation - Preimplantation genetic haplotyping is already available at Bridge

Bridge now offers cancer screening following the HFEA's decision to allow PGD for inherited predisposition to cancer.

'The Future of Reproductive Medicine'
Read the views of Professor Alan Handyside and Dr Alan Thornhill: -
'Preimplantation Genetic Screening: Select or Reject? - it's not just about improving pregancy rates.

Focus on genetics
Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) for aneuploidy (abnormal chromosome number) aims to improve healthy live birth rates in women of advanced maternal age (35 years and above) and other at-risk couples. Follow up analysis of abnormal embryos also provides valuable information about your chance of a live birth.

Preimplantation genetic screening for aneuploidy in advanced maternal age

Currently we offer PGS for 7 chromosomes (out of 24 in total) frequently found in early embryos which result in miscarriage or abnormality. We will soon be expanding the number of chromosomes analysed and are developing new methods for 24 chromosome screening.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for chromosomal translocations
About 1 in 500 of us have a chromosome translocation in which part of one chromosome has been exchanged for another. As there is typically no loss or gain of genetic material - the translocation is 'balanced' - this has no effect on the individual but there is a high risk that eggs or sperm will inherit an 'unbalanced' combination often resulting in repeated miscarriage or abnormal pregnancy.

The HFEA has now granted Bridge a general licence to screen for abnormal numbers of the translocated chromosomes using a similar approach to preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) for aneuploidy (abnormal chromosome number). Developing a test for a specific translocation takes about a month and, if the translocation carrier is male, we can also offer sperm screening to estimate the level of risk. For enquiries, please contact Charlotte Bancroft - 020 7403 3363.
